On January 17 last year I became coach of Real Sporting de Gijón. A great illusion and a real responsibility. Since then, if I have counted correctly, 516 days have passed. In all of them I have tried to learn and enjoy myself, giving my best to a club and a city that are part of the history of the sport I love. I have focused on the present, living each situation with intensity, while knowing that an important part of my job was to leave a good foundation for the future.
The beginnings were complex, and that is something that my coaching staff and I assumed, but also very exciting because we soon formed a team with capital letters, a human group motivated to achieve goals together. As the months went by, we progressed, competing better and adding matches that strengthened us, always with the inexhaustible strength of a unique fan base and the feeling that Mareo transmits, a very special place. That energy has led us to fight for promotion until the last minute of the season. And although we may be disappointed, in time we will see that we have reason to be very proud.
Today I feel that the time has come to close this stage, which has been very productive. We have left everything, we have been moved together, in victories and in defeats. I feel that we have connected as you can only connect when you put passion in what you believe in. That is also winning. I want you to know that this coaching staff I lead is now much better than when we arrived in Gijón. And that is thanks to the demands of this club and the daily work with this group of people -players and employees- with whom we have shared 516 days of authentic love for soccer.
I want to thank Grupo Orlegi for giving me the opportunity to live this unique experience and to each and every one of the people who are part of Sporting, you are essential for this club to be so special and I feel, from today, one more Sporting fan.
