It was August 2019 and the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito was hosting the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana. The hosts, Independiente del Valle, one of the “Cinderellas” of the competition, were hosting another Independiente, Avellaneda, the team with the most Copa Libertadores de América titles (7). The Argentinians also had the advantage from the first leg, having won 2-1 at home. The predictions were blown out of the water. The humble Ecuadorian team, coached by Miguel Angel Ramirez, were able to overcome Sebastián Beccacece’s “El Rojo” (1-0). El Molinón will bring them together again four years later.
